A professionals seminar featuring presentations from Derisk Geomining and the CRU Group was held at the Singapore Exchange on Monday 21 May. The topic of the seminar was the risks and opportunities within the nickel mining industry.
Nickel prices have risen by 33% in the past year, and according to Markets Insider, nickel may be the most important metal in lithium-ion batteries. Nickel is also a key material in stainless steel, which is expected to reach an annual market size of USD 134 billion by 2025.
The seminar looked at the risks and opportunities associated with these projections from two perspectives. Mark Berry, Derisk Director and Principal Geologist gave a presentation on the nature, occurrence, exploration, mining and processing of nickel, providing the audience with an overview of the two principal types of naturally occurring nickel (laterite and sulphide deposits) and the differences in exploration, mining and processing. Alice Yu, CRU Group Consultant, discussed the developments and outlook of nickel prices and the market.
